Jacksonville teen injured in boating accident on Ortega River
Importance of boat safety underscored by boat/PWC collision
Posted Thursday, July 26, 2007
A 15-year-old Jacksonville resident was injured when his personal watercraft (PWC) collided with another vessel on the Ortega River Tuesday evening.
William Cesery was riding a 10-foot Honda PWC when he jumped a vessel wake. That put him in the direct path of a 23-foot Hydra Sport vessel operated by Richard Brooke, 46, also of Jacksonville.
According to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials, Brooke took evasive action, turning his boat to the right. Cesery turned to the left, keeping him in the path of the oncoming boat. The vessel operated by Brooke then ran over Cesery’s PWC.
Cesery was transported to Shands Hospital in Jacksonville. He was listed in critical condition Tuesday night.
